Man Attempts to Hijack Plane After Crashing Through Airport Gate
Chaos erupted at a regional airport after a man rammed his vehicle through a secured gate and sprinted toward an active runway in what police say was a desperate attempt to hijack a plane.
According to airport officials, the ordeal began when security cameras captured a sedan barreling toward a restricted-access barrier. The vehicle smashed through the gate, sending debris flying as startled workers shouted for help. Alarms triggered immediately, dispatching airport police and grounding nearby aircraft.
Bodycam footage shows officers racing onto the tarmac as the suspect sprinted toward a small passenger plane preparing for departure. Witnesses say the man was shouting incoherently, claiming he “needed to get out of the country right now.”
As ground crews backed away, the suspect attempted to open the aircraft door, pounding on it while shouting at the pilot to let him in. Officers tackled him just feet away from the plane’s stairs, wrestling him to the ground as he flailed wildly.
Throughout the arrest, the suspect insisted he was being “chased” and that the plane was his “only chance.” Officers later confirmed he was not being pursued by anyone before the incident. Instead, they believe he may have been under the influence or experiencing a severe mental health episode.
No passengers were harmed, though the incident caused major delays as the runway was swept for debris and the damaged gate was secured.
The man now faces multiple charges, including airport trespassing, attempted aircraft hijacking, criminal damage, and reckless endangerment.
Officials say the quick response from airport police likely prevented a catastrophe—and potentially saved dozens of lives.
